2010 Memorial Resolution Northeastern Minnesota Women of the ELCA: Women of Faith and Climate Change

Whereas, we, as Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (Women of the ELCA), have been made more and more aware about issues of climate change and its effects on human beings; and

Whereas, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that between 250 million and 1 billion additional people will be displaced by climate change alone between now and 2050 (World Watch Report, "Global Climate Change: The Threat to Human Health", 2009); and

Whereas, environmental-related illnesses kill the equivalent of a jumbo jet full of children every 30 minutes (Gro Bruntland, World Watch Report, "Global Climate Change: The Threat to Human Health", 2009); and

Whereas, we are aware that 70% of the world’s poor are women, the ones who will be most affected by climate change and its resulting water shortages and famines; and

Whereas, we as women of faith, are called to a life of responsibility for God’s creation, preserving the earth’s resources for our children and God’s children all around the world; therefore be it

Resolved that we as individual participants, congregational units and synodical organizations of the Women of the ELCA continue to educate ourselves, our families, and our congregational units about the many aspects of climate change and its effects; and

Be it further resolved that synodical organizations, through the Mission Action focus area, be encouraged to use synodical newsletters as an avenue of education on climate change and that congregational units be encouraged further to share this information in their congregation’s newsletters; and

Be it further resolved that the conferences/clusters and synodical organizations of the Women of the ELCA consider making climate change a focus for one of their gatherings within the coming year; and

Be it further resolved that synodical women’s organizations connect and cooperate with the ELCA State Public Policy Offices to which they relate and with the ELCA Washington Office in advocating for new energy sources.

Lutherans Restoring Creation

  • A Quote from Luther
    Martin Luther

"It is true that we are justified by faith alone without works, but I speak of the true faith which after it justifies does not snore lazily."
