Preserve a viable safety net: Circle of Protection*

First, do no harm! As people of faith, we believe Christ calls us to work together to meet our neighbors’ basic needs (Matthew 25). Minnesota’s six ELCA bishops teamed with the six Roman Catholic bishops and archbishop in sending a letter to the governor and legislators on March 15, 2011, stating:

"The most telling measure of how well we care for each other is to consider how we treat those who are most vulnerable among us."

Our neighbors hit hardest by the current economic crisis—people who are unemployed or underemployed, families with low incomes, people with disabilities, and people who are elderly, children, and/or of color— should not bear an undue burden from budget reductions. Legislation must not strip away services that are essential for our neighbors’ survival and dignity! Failure to care for people in need has moral and economic consequences, both long- and short-term. We sometimes hear that, like a family, the government must "tighten its belt" and reduce spending. In response, we ask, "What family would not seek another source of income rather than deny their children or loved ones food, shelter or medical care?"

    Martin Luther

"It is true that we are justified by faith alone without works, but I speak of the true faith which after it justifies does not snore lazily."
