LCPPM is proud to support Lutheran leaders from congregations around the state as they meet with elected officials to urge continued progress towards these goals. Together we are proud of how our advocacy played a pivotal role in helping to pass these policies. In recent years, nine resolutions calling for science-based climate goals and energy savings passed by wide margins at ELCA synod assemblies. Many congregations have undertaken significant retrofits and other energy efficiency measures in order to be better stewards of the environment while also saving money. These congregations and their members “practice what they preach” and are thus credible messengers who demonstrate that they are doing their part and exercising sound stewardship. Pollution and climate change affects all of us, so the legislature must do its part by maintaining, strengthening and defending current clean energy policies.
Defend clean energy policies – no rollbacks!
Reducing waste and increasing the availability of clean energy while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas pollution and promoting a healthier environment are noble, wise and attainable goals. In 2007, both houses of the Minnesota Legislature overwhelmingly supported these wise goals in "Minnesota’s Next Generation Energy Act" and Governor Pawlenty signed them into law.
LCPPM will continue to oppose any proposed weakening of the initiatives in this Act, including:
- 1.5 percent per year energy savings goal (download fact sheet)
- 25 percent of energy to meet Renewable Electricity Standard by 2025 (download fact sheet)
- Science-based limits on our global warming pollution; no new coal without carbon offset
As people of faith, "we see the despoiling of the environment as nothing less than the degradation of God’s gracious gift of creation" (ELCA, 1993).
